Skin Barrier Repair Tips

The skin barrier is a crucial component of our overall skin health.

A well-functioning skin barrier maintains hydration, protects against irritants, and promotes a harmonious complexion.

Many of us are interested in the aesthetic side or skincare and skin health, and forget to acknowledge our skin as a vital organ with important functions, such as immune defense.

A damaged skin barrier leaves the body vulnerable to infection, so caring for the skin both internally and externally can do wonders for our overall health.

As always, when it comes to addressing any imbalance of the body it is best to take a holistic approach for sustainable results.

  • Starting with the basics: Stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet, move your body and prioritise good rest (e.g. time away from screens)

  • Consider gentle and nourishing skincare: Products containing soothing and healing botanicals such as calendula, burdock root, plant oils and beeswax

  • Prioritise the following ingredients:

    - Humectant ingredients (honey, marshmallow root extract, glycerin and rose hydrosol) provide hydrating benefits to replenish dehydrated skin

    - Emollient ingredients (jojoba, safflower, sunflower, camellia, macadamia and rosehip oils) help to soothe and soften rough, dry and irritated areas

    - Occlusive ingredients (beeswax and mango butter) are similar to emollients, and act as a stronger protective barrier to lock in moisture

  • Avoid harsh products: Using a gentle cleanser and avoiding excessive physical exfoliation and oil stripping face masks gives the skin a better chance to repair itself
